The late stages of a multi-table tournament run from the moment the bubble bursts to the last hand at the final table, and they reward a different set of instincts from the rest of the event. Pay jumps, stack sizes and position in the payout ladder now decide the value of a hand as much as the cards do.

Get those three things right and a deep run turns into a final table finish. Get them wrong and you’ll spend the last few levels folding your way down the payout ladder.

What to Do When the Bubble Bursts

ICM (independent chip modelling) values your stack against the payouts instead of against the chips in front of you, so the same hand can be a clear call at one stage of an event and a clear fold at another. The bubble is where that pressure is at its most severe, because the gap between nothing and a min-cash is the widest jump in the tournament.

It’s also released the instant the bubble breaks. The next few pay jumps are small and frequent, and the table plays much closer to a cash game. Your goal is simple: build a stack for the final table, even if that means busting out. The payout increase you’re risking is a small one.

Short stacks who tightened up to survive the bubble should re-open their aggression immediately. Waiting costs them the only window in the tournament where chips are cheap.

None of that means taking needless risks. It means accepting marginal spots you’d pass on elsewhere, and it means short stacks have to act before blinding out becomes the bigger danger. Some commitment decisions are correct at this stage even when the chip-EV is negative.

Why Pay Jumps Change Your Decisions

As the final table approaches, the pressure builds again. The size of the gaps between payouts sets how strong it gets: large jumps create mini-bubbles, and each one makes players unwilling to risk their tournament life. A winner-takes-all event has no pay jumps at all, so it plays like a cash game from the first hand to the last.

You don’t need the maths to see the effect. Imagine a three-handed final table:

  • Player 1: 5,000 chips
  • Player 2: 10,000 chips
  • Player 3: 15,000 chips

You’re Player 2, and the rules force you to take an all-in coinflip against an opponent of your choice. Chip-for-chip the two flips look identical, but the payout ladder makes them very different.

Take the flip against Player 1 and a win locks up second place with a stack big enough to attack the leader. A loss still leaves you 5,000 chips and a live tournament.

Take it against Player 3 and a win makes you chip leader without securing anything, while a loss busts you in third and hands Player 1 a second-place finish they never risked a chip for.

Player 1 knows this, which is why the shortest stack often gets a freer ride than the chip counts suggest. If the two bigger stacks are avoiding each other, the short stack has room to steal, at least until the blinds catch up.

How Do Stack Sizes Shape Final Table Strategy?

Talk of “ICM pressure” at a final table really covers four separate pressures, and which one applies to you depends on your stack.

  • Short stacks are under constant pressure to move, because folding hands them a slow exit.
  • Mid stacks can afford to play tight, hoping a shorter stack blinds out or two other players collide.
  • Big stacks profit from everyone else’s reluctance and can apply pressure with a much wider range.
  • Every stack prefers to play pots against opponents it has covered.

Playing a Short Stack at the Final Table

Getting very short is normal in the late stages, and when you’re first to act your options usually narrow to shoving or folding. Push/fold charts are the default framework for that, though they aren’t the only option, and raise/folding still has a place in some spots.

“Nash calculators” generate equilibrium solutions for push/fold ranges and give you a sensible baseline for which poker hands to shove. The output won’t always be the strongest exploitative play, because it assumes your opponents are doing the same thing, but it’s a solid reference point and a useful introduction to GTO poker thinking under pressure.

ICM calculations are difficult to run by hand, so most players use software. Working through different prize pool structures away from the table is the fastest way to build the estimates you’ll need on the fly.

A player’s mental game tends to suffer at a final table, usually through nerves, and there isn’t much you can do about it in the moment. The work happens before you get there.

  • Treat final table play as its own skill and prepare for it separately.
