The poker rules are rather simple but to master the game, you will need effort and work. As with anything in life, things take time, and you should start with the easiest steps to fix.

Tip 1 - Play Fewer Tables

Don’t play more tables than you can handle. I know, it is difficult to select which games to play, so you just register for everything that looks good. Or you really want to play poker, but you are short on time and again, decide to register and play too many games at once.

Be careful with this practice. It is much easier to focus and make the best decisions when you can pay attention to the plays that are happening. You can’t do that so easily with too many tables at once. Playing fewer tables will also let you take your time before making any decisions. Most of the time, slow and steady are the best ways to win any race.

Tip 2 - Play Within Your Bankroll

You should always play according to your bankroll. The winning player is the one who makes the mathematically correct plays with more consistency.

If you feel pressured and scared because of the buy-in of a tournament or cash game, most likely you won’t make the best plays, especially if these plays require bluffing for your life or making a risky call.

Playing within your bankroll gives you the space to not take each decision too personally.

Tip 3 - Watch Out for Timing Tells

The most frequent tells in online poker are timing tells. The amount of time a player takes to make an action at an online poker table can tell us a lot.

Even if you have an easy decision to make in some spots, you should still watch out for how fast you act in the hand. You don’t want to give away that it was, in fact, an easy decision. That can help your opponent to narrow down your range and decide what to do from there. We never want to help our opponents figure out what kind of hand we have.

Tip 4 - Watch Out for Sizing Tells

A very common tell in online poker is betting too much or even too little with certain hands. If you constantly bet bigger with your bluffs, that will tip off your opponents eventually. And the same goes for your value hands.

Your goal is to be unpredictable to your opponents. If they can see patterns in how much you bet, according to the strength of your hand, they will be able to adapt and make better decisions against you.

Tip 5 - Don't Tilt

Don’t tilt. We all wish we could win every single hand we play. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible and you will lose many times even with very strong holdings.

Understanding and most importantly accepting this natural dynamic in poker is a key element in controlling your emotions and keeping your cool while you play.

Getting too upset with unlucky outcomes doesn’t really make sense and it won’t help you perform better. It might actually make you play worse.
